Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone (PPSEZ), a private firm planning to list on the stock exchange, yesterday reached an agreement with Singapore-based Cleantech Solar Corporation to install a new solar panel system by April, according to the press release from PPSEZ.

Bob Anderson, Deputy CEO of LCH Investment Group which owns PPSEZ, said that the deal is another move to provide clean energy options to the SEZ and its customers.

Mr. Anderson said the new solar energy system will be integrated smoothly.

"We initially install panels on the administration building as a showcase to test the system and to gain operational experiences with the system. We will have a monitor to set up in our lobby showing the energy that is generated, and the amount of carbon that we save every day," said Mr. Anderson.

Stephen Evans, and owner representative of PPSEZ, said: "Phnom Penh SEZ is committed to being a socially responsible company and is always looking for ways to save tenants money. As a result, we've naturally explored the feasibility of installing solar panels in the zone."

Arnaud Ayral, regional business development director of Cleantech Solar, which operates in six Asian countries, said that PPSEZ will operate the system to generate electricity itself.

His company is leasing the equipment to the SEZ, ensuring it is properly designed and installed, and providing technical support, he said, adding that there was no risk for the client.

"There is a lot of interest in the [solar-energy] market, but only a small number of companies have made a decisive step so far. Phnom Penh SEZ is putting itself in the front row. For their business, as well as for the community and the environment this is an important step," Mr. Ayral said.

PPSEZ is located about eight kilometer west of Phnom Penh International Airport – about 18 km from the city center. It has said it plans to issue about 20 per cent of its total shares on the bourse this year to raise funds for expansion.
