Juice jacking is a technique that used by anonymous to access and steal data from devices using public charging systems or from unknown sources.

When you connect your device to a public charging port (airport, entertainment venue, or supermarket), scammers/fraudsters can steal your sensitive data such as bank account information, or install malware to take control of your device.

Tips to stay safe from Juice Jacking:

  1. Charge from a Power Outlet: As far as possible, use a Power Outlet to charge your device instead of using a USB Port Charger in public.
  2. Charge using a personal charger: Use a personal charger plugged into a Power Outlet, which is a more reliable way to charge than using a USB Port Charger, which is not safe in public places.
  3. USB data blockers, also known as USB condoms, can be an effective way to prevent Juice Jacking by blocking data transfer through USB cable. These devices plug into your charging cable and sit between your device and a public USB charging station, allowing power to flow but blocking any data transfer.
  4. Disable USB data transfer: Some devices allow disabling USB data transfer in Settings, which can prevent unauthorized access to data via a USB connection.
  5. Beware of public charging stations: If it is necessary to use public charging stations, check and choose to use a reliable terminal.
  6. Keep your device up to date: Make sure your device's operating system and software are up-to-date (Latest Security Patches) to minimize vulnerabilities that could be compromised by an attacker.
  7. Use your own portable Power Banks: Charging your device with your own portable Power Bank is a safer option than charging via USB Charger in public.
  8. Device Encryption: Device encryption can help keep data safe even if the device is lost or stolen.
  9. Password protection: The use of strong password provides an extra layer of security and ensures that only authorized individuals have access to sensitive data.
  10. Permission setting: Set permissions on the application only when there is a need to use, such as access to the location or microphone.
  11. Backup Data: Backup data regularly to avoid data loss during the theft or loss of the device.
  12. If it is suspected that your phone is compromised while charging, remove the device from the charger immediately.
