Wireless Pairing (Social Engineering Attack)
With the significant increase in online activity and the use of electronic devices, it's important to be aware of potential risks such as scams and fraud.
Wireless Pairing is a social engineering attack by pairing devices that allow unauthorized users to remote access control on the device and possibly control all activities and probably commit money laundering from victims' mobile banking accounts.
Intrusion and fraud methods
- Criminals may collect your personal information, such as your address and phone number etc.
- Criminals may compromise your Wi-Fi network or take advantage of your use of unsecured public Wi-Fi.
- They could call you pretending to be a provider of essential services; for example, water supply or electricity service by instructing you to install software and guide you on how to connect to the online payment function.
- During the introduction, the criminals persuade you to enable "Developer Mode", enable the "Wireless Debugging" option and then be able to connect your mobile phone to their "Pairing Device" computer.
- Criminals use plugins to control your mobile device, and this device can pose a significant security risk that could affect your mobile banking operations.
Tips to stay safe from Wireless Pairing
- Always verify the identity of service providers before following any instructions.
- Refrain from sharing personal and confidential information (such as phone number, date of birth, address, PIN codes, passwords, OTPs, and credit card information) on third-party systems and social networks.
- Do not download or install any software applications from unknown sources. Doing so may create a security loophole for your device, allowing it to be remotely controlled and monitored.
- Enable two-factor authentication, set a PIN for every transaction, limit the amount of transactions, etc.
- Regularly check your account balance and bank statement, and contact your bank immediately in case of any doubts or suspicious.
